Michael Van Lente, Ph.D.
Mike Van Lente is a patent attorney specializing in chemistry-related patent application preparation and prosecution. He has experience serving a variety of clients within the framework of large and small private law firms and as an Examiner in the TC1700 area at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has helped academic and corporate clients to obtain patents for their inventions, both in the U.S. and in other countries, since completing his law degree in 2006. Subject areas have been quite diverse, including particularly battery and display technologies, DNA chemistry and organic chemistry.
Prior to law school, Mike worked in the Basic Research Department of a paper company and as a Senior Scientist in the Research Department of a small spinoff company that manufactured swimming pool test strips and other colorimetric analytical products. His research interests while working in industry included the chemistry of organic color changing dyes, qualitative and quantitative colorimetric test development and coating formulation optimization.
Mike’s graduate studies were in the field of organic electrochemistry. This led to a postdoctoral experience at the Institute of Paper Chemistry involving the application of electrochemical techniques to the study of wood pulping chemistry under pulping conditions. Mike has taught organic chemistry to appreciative classrooms of high school students, undergraduates and graduate students at various times.
